Every year, the UK throws away several million end-of-life hard hats. These are normally just thrown into general (plastic) waste where, because of the way recycling systems work, the chances of them actually being recycled back in to new plastics is minimal.
The National Hard Hat Recycling Scheme was established in 2017 with the goal of diverting hard hats into dedicated waste processing, thereby ensuring hat waste is recycled.
The scheme is now operated by Circularity Direct (see:- www.circularity.direct ), operating a pay-per-hat scheme.
Beyond the per-hat recycling fee, there are no other charges apart from an optional collection service operated in partnership with Royal Mail.
